Our Dogs
Our oldest pet is our 14-year-old dog, a miniature beagle, Cassie. She is a very sweet girl that we got when our oldest was a baby. Her favorite human is Drew and then Kelsey, she prefers us all to be home with her all the time. However, if Drew is home, she is content. She has severe separation anxiety, if left alone she will literally tear up door frames and anything else that keeps her away from us. Cassie also loves to bark at absolutely nothing. She will spend hours walking through the house and around the yard just barking. Thankfully she only does this during the day but most of the time she is sleeping and snoring very loudly. She will not go out in the rain ever! Even to go potty, if it is steadily raining, she will make bad choices by finding a spot in the house. The crazy thing is though, she LOVES to play in snow or while it is snowing. When she was younger, she would dig up moles and other small rodents, and roam all over my In-laws 21 acres.
Marty McFly came next, he looks like the King Charles Cavalier spaniel breed other than being much smaller. What we know is his mom was a pug/beagle mix and his dad was part border collie, but he was tiny. His parents belonged to some of our family, and we picked him out of the litter. Marty is 4 years old. When he was only a couple months old, he got into our outside trash. Nothing unusual for a puppy, right? Right, but he found the chicken package we had in there and became deathly sick. It was a very scary time, and we had all already fallen in love with this puppy and couldn’t even consider giving up on him. After a rush trip to our vet who recommended we take him to the University of Missouri Veterinary Hospital (thankfully only 30-minute drive away) we checked him in and had to leave him overnight. We are forever grateful they were able to flush his system, and we were able to pick him up the next day. Marty has been a healthy dog ever since. As long as Cassie is nearby, he is happy, but he loves his humans too. If we leave the house when the chickens are free ranging, Marty thinks it is a wonderful game to chase and catch them and typically killing them. We learned the hard way to either keep the chickens up if we are away or keep Marty in the house.
