How We Named Our Homestead
When we were finally able to own goats, we had to register them and Kelsey with the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA). Goats must be registered to be part of the dairy goat shows. Does that mean you have to be registered to own dairy goats, in general no. However, for our purposes, showing goats requires Kelsey and the goats to be registered on ADGA. That being said, she needed a farm name to register.
We wanted something that represented all of us, so we sat down as a family to brainstorm. We came up with several. Some are as simple as, Chicken and Goat Farm or The Egg Haven to different ways to arrange the letters of our last name. Once we had all our ideas written down, we voted on each option and Okae Homestead won! O is the first letter of our last name and then the kids’ first names, Kelsey, Abby and Elliot. We chose homestead instead of farm or ranch mainly because farms and ranches to us are large homes and a lot of acres.
Okae is pronounced like okay, and we think our slogan or tagline will be one of these or along the same lines as these. “Okae Homestead, the best in town!” “Okae Homestead, we do our best” “Okae Homestead, the best is yet to come” We don’t have any doubts that we are doing a decent job, but we like to be silly, and we can’t resist a silly pun or joke.
