Welcome

Welcome to our blog, Okae Homestead! We plan to share our experiences as we trial and error our way along this homesteading journey through this blog. There are several different topics we will be talking about as we have a lot going on most of the time. Animals, gardening, harvesting, preserving, and ways to make money from our homestead. The main animals we will talk about are goats, chickens, cats and dogs. We have Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, a variety of backyard chickens, two cats and two dogs. We still have a lot to learn about all these topics, but we have already learned a lot that we want to share with you.

Who We Are

My name is Rachal, my husband Drew and I have been together since 2005 and married since 2018. We have 3 children together, Kelsey, Abby and Elliot. We have lived on our little quarter acre for 5 years and we absolutely love it! My name is Rachal, my husband Drew and I have been together since 2005 and married since 2018. Future Goals

Drew is working towards a blacksmith and woodworking trade. He has been doing research for several years, built a forge and currently has plans for a shop we will be building soon. You can see what he has been working on at SunTeaForge.com. Drew also loves to garden, as do I and our son. The girls enjoy some gardening but don’t love it quite as much as we do. Although they do appreciate the beauty of the flowers they grow. Drew mainly handles the veggie gardens, and I handle pruning fruit bushes, trees and vines and I have a flower garden. We all enjoy harvesting from the garden and me and Drew do the preserving.

I have been working towards my own businesses as well. I love animals and my main goal is to have an animal rescue one day. As much as I would love to jump into that I need to support my family first, and animal rescues are nonprofit in nature. So, my research and experiments are on animal food. Treats are easiest to make since batches can be quite large and there are so many resources to find and make recipes. I’ve worked on homemade dog food recipes too, trying to find healthy and affordable alternatives to kibble.

My current endeavor is my blog The Homestead Startup where I help you plan and start your own homestead. If you already have a homestead this is still a great place for you. This blog covers a variety of homesteading topics that you can utilize to expand or pivot your homestead. There will also be resources in The Homestead Startup Shop to help you manage your homestead. Be sure to check it out!
